Transit time at an airport never really bothered me in the past. It was all just part of the journey you took to fulfil your wanderlust and discover new places. But suddenly, when you add an active little toddler in the mix – transit time takes on a whole new meaning!
Our recent travels to the Maldives meant we had a few hours transit at Changi Airport, Singapore. This airport is absolutely amazing for those travelling with young children, and actually makes transit time fun (well, as fun as it can be). Read on to discover why Changi Airport is the best airport for travelling families.
All three terminals (T1, T2 and T3) in Changi Airport offer adventure-filled playgrounds for children. It is the perfect place for little ones to stretch their legs, use up some energy and make new friends. Our little one loved climbing through the playground and navigating the obstacles.
T1 Playground: Located next to the Outdoor Garden (Level 2, Transit Area)
T2 Playground: Located next to the Family Zone (Level 2, Transit Area)
T3 Playgrounds: Located next to SATS Special Service Lounge (Level 2, Transit Area) AND located outside gates A16 – A20 (Level 2, Transit Area)
The Butterfly Garden is full of lush greenery, sweetly-perfumed flowers and a mini-waterfall. Kids and adults alike will enjoy wandering through this unique butterfly garden and watching the vividly-coloured butterflies flutter around.
Our little one loved watching the Koi fish gracefully swim around in the Koi Pond at T3. There is plenty of seating around the Koi Pond, so parents can relax while their kids watch the fish. Kids can even get involved with feeding the Koi at designated feeding times.
Travellers can relax and enjoy complimentary movies in the Movie Theatres located in T2 and T3. A range of movies are screened, including some of the latest children’s movies. If you have a lengthy transit, be sure to check the screening times in advance and fit in a movie.
Swimming Pool with Jacuzzi
If you really need to tire the kids out before the next flight, why not take a dip in the rooftop swimming pool?! The pool is located at the Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel in T1 and also has a jacuzzi, poolside bar and showering facilities. Kids will love watching the planes take off while splashing around in the pool. (Charges apply)
Free City Tours
If you are in transit for at least 6 hours, Changi Airport offers free city tours so you can experience some of the main tourist attractions that Singapore has to offer. This is a fantastic way to get a taster of Singapore if you haven’t been here before.
For those families wanting a decent sleep for a few hours, consider booking into one of the Transit Hotels. The hotels allow you to stay for a few hours to get some rest and relaxation, and really can be a life saver if you have a lengthy transit.
Changi Airport also offers a range of amenities that make travelling with children that little bit easier:
- Priority lane in the immigration hall for families with young children
- Free strollers are available throughout the terminal
- Plenty of Baby Care Rooms with a private section for nursing, nappy change facilities and hot water dispensers
- Pharmacies and medical centres are available in each terminal if required
- Shower facilities are available for a small charge
- The free monorail provides a fun way to travel between terminals with your kids
